Heybrook Primary and Nursery School

YEAR 2

Welcome to Year 2.

The Year 2 classes and teachers are:

Marigold - Mrs Towsey

Yellow - Miss Khan

Buttercup - Mrs Smith/Mrs Keating

Our Key Question this half term is:

If I were an explorer, where would I go?

English: This half term, our English work is based on the book 'The snail and the whale' by Julia Donaldson.  It tells the story of a a snail hitching a lift on great big humpback's tail, Snail is so amazed and overwhelmed by the size and beauty of the natural world that she starts to feel small and vulnerable. Though being the feisty creature that she is, Snail continues her voyage and rescues Whale when he gets into a sticky situation. Our year 2's have done a great job already in writing a descriptive recount.

Maths: This half term we are focusing on learning the multiplication and division facts for 2, 5 and 10s.  We will be using the method grouping and repeated addition to solve tricky multiplication problems.  We are also looking at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

Reading: In phonics, we will be concentrating on phase 5 sounds: ay, ou, ie, ea, oy and ir, as well as practicing sounds with alternative spellings.  We are encouraging children to read regularly.  The Getepic website is a great reading resource that all children can access - a range of fiction and non-fiction books are available as well as books with audio that can be played to the children.  The children are continuing to practice their comprehension skills based on vocabulary, retrieval, sequencing and inference.  Please encourage your child to read regularly and practice their phonics using the following websites:

www.phonicsplay.co.uk                        username: jan21              password: home

www.getepic                                           (class code is available from class teachers.)

History and Geography: We have enjoyed learning about Amelia Earhart and Ibn Battuta. The children learnt all about Amelia Earhart's journey across the world. We will end this half term's history/geography discussing the question: If I were an explorer, where would I go?

PE: Gymnastics. So far the children have been doing really well and enjoying the sessions.
